ABOUT US
Georgia State’s B.S. in Computer Science degree program dates back to 1984. It was initially offered by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
Welcome from the Chair
On behalf of our faculty and staff, I want to welcome you to the Department of Computer Science at Georgia State University. As applications of computers have become ubiquitous and the need has grown to analyze and understand the ever-increasing scale of data that is being generated daily, computational thinking and analytical skills are imperative in today’s workforce. Our department offers comprehensive curricula that lead to a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in computer science or data science and is committed to preparing our students to find employment and assume prominent roles in industry, government and academia.
The Department of Computer Science is developing and implementing strategies to broaden participation in computing by providing a diverse and inclusive environment in which to experience and study different facets of computer science. I would like to invite you to become part of our community as a student, alumnus, collaborator, faculty member or sponsor. I also invite you to visit the department to explore the opportunities we offer.

Professor and Chair
Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to excel in teaching, research, and service with the goal of preparing undergraduate and graduate students for careers in industry, government, and academia. Specifically, the department conducts cutting-edge research in computing and interdisciplinary areas and strives to impart knowledge to a diverse student population through the implementation of inclusive pedagogical strategies.
What Makes Us Unique
Computer science is increasingly becoming an interdisciplinary field and our department has been at the forefront of this movement.
We participate in the interdisciplinary Molecular Basis of Disease program in computational biomedicine. Several of our faculty members hold associate positions in the Neuroscience Institute and several are employed by the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDS), a collaboration among Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Emory universities.
Georgia State’s Data Mining Lab is jointly operated by the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Several members of our faculty belong to the Evidence-Based Cybersecurity Research Group, a partnership with the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. The interdisciplinary center known as INformation Security and Privacy: Interdisciplinary Research and Education (INSPIRE) is led by computer science faculty and draws members from a variety of units across campus.
