Abdullah Bal

Dr. Abdullah Bal’s research interests include artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, deep learning, image processing, computer vision, and optic computing. He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications.

Dr. Bal served/serves as the PI, co-PI, or researcher for many academic and industrial projects. Notable projects in which he’s been involved include “Forensic Image Analysis,” “Multi Sensor Based System Design for Target Detection and Tracking,” “Improvement of Distance Education Performance by Data Mining Techniques,” “Digital and Thermal Imaging for Historical Structures' Photogrammetric Analysis,” “Joint Wavelet Transform Based Hyperspectral Image Processing,” and “Real Time Target Detection and Tracking.” These projects have received funding from the U.S. Army Research Office, the U.S. Army Missile Command Office, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, and the Technology Transfer Office of Yildiz Technical University (YTU).
With more than 25 years of experience as an academician, Dr. Bal has taught a number of courses, including design and analysis of algorithms, digital image processing, machine learning, deep learning, data science, optical pattern recognition, artificial neural networks, programming languages, signals and systems, and electronic circuits.

In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Bal served as chair of the Department of Informatics at YTU from 2009 to 2016. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Electrical and Electronics College between 2012 and 2015.

Dr. Bal’s dedication and contributions to the field of research have earned him several prestigious awards. Notable among them are the Faculty Outstanding Research Publication Award of the Year (2006), first place in the Turkish Air Force Academy Science Competition (2009), and the Best Paper Award at the 3rd International Conference on Future Computational Technologies (ICFCT'2016).
